Kaloli

Kaloli is the first full - length LP from Nihiloxica, the darkest electro - percussion group in Kampala. This album combines the driving Ugandan percussion of the Nilotika Cultural Ensemble with technoid analog synth lines and hybrid kit playing by the UK's pq and Spooky - J, creating an otherworldly sound. It takes a journey through the uncharted zone between two dance - music cultures, where traditional elements transform into something more menacing and nihilistic. Recorded right after a concert supporting Aphex Twin, Kaloli captures the energy of Nihiloxica's amazing live shows and amplifies it with pq's honest and powerful production. In September 2019, for five days in Bradford, Nihiloxica recorded most of the album, which features eight synthetic takes on Uganda's traditional folk rhythms. Every song has a groove and a drum pattern to discover and expand, taking you through different rhythmic regions like Busoga in the east, Bwola in the north, Gunjula in the central area, and Buganda.
