Eighty Nine (Translucent Gold Limited Edition)

This is a limited pressing of a translucent gold - colored vinyl LP. Charlie Gabriel, a remarkable musician, started his professional career in 1943, filling in for his father in New Orleans' Eureka Brass Band. As a teen in Detroit, he played with Lionel Hampton's band featuring Charles Mingus, and spent nine years with J.C. Heard's group. He's performed with legends like Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, and Aretha Franklin. Now, for the first time, he's the bandleader on a record. Since 2006, he's been part of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. 'Eighty Nine' stands out, not just because of the smaller ensemble. Charlie says they had no set plan but just enjoyed jamming and having musical conversations. The album includes six classic standards and three new pieces written by Gabriel, like 'Yellow Moon' and 'The Darker It Gets'. Also, Charlie returns to his first instrument, the clarinet, on many tracks.
