Description
Patrick Belaga's Blutt, conceived in Apulia at the heel of Italy's boot - shaped peninsula, creates music for the wild imagination. The word 'Blutt' has German roots, meaning 'naked', 'bare', 'blood' or even resembling 'butt' with letter changes. However, the classically - trained composer and cellist didn't choose this name for these meanings. Blutt's nine dreamy compositions draw inspiration from a thoughtful road trip with a friend and mysterious muffled music from an unknown source. A blend of jazz and classical music haunted Belaga in the Byzantine town of Gallipoli and seeped into his dreams of lost civilizations. This album is the result, where organic instrumentals and electronic production combine into a sound that's both modern and ancient. On 'Sigh', samples of mewing incantations and tape hiss float above the waltzing piano chords. On 'Rust', composite layers of Belaga's cello play in a sad harmony. 'Momentum' has an eerie rhythm full of romantic longing. Kai Knight's violin with Eastern European and Middle Eastern folk scale quarter - tones explores deep melancholy. 'Unsoft' has notes haunted by running water recordings, and the opener 'Lilt' echoes panpipes and a Jew's harp. As an accomplished composer and performer who has worked with artists like Wu Tsang, boychild, Josh Johnson and Asma Maroof, Belaga's Blutt features flawless collaborations. Vocalist and instrumentalist Jazmin Romero creates the surreal melodies of 'Grey Eye', and multidisciplinary dance artist and producer Riley Watts contributes to the muted, motorik movement of 'The Tunnel is a Tower'. This record is a stunning soundtrack for sleep's strangeness and time's heart - breaking transience, like an intense half - remembered dream with lingering emotions. Mastered by Rashad Becker, with artwork by Giovanni Furlino and design by N MRE 08.
