Down On The Upside is Soundgarden's fifth studio album, released on May 21, 1996, via A&M Records. It's the band's third album with bassist Ben Shepherd. After a global tour for their 1994 album Superunknown, Soundgarden started working on this release. The music here is less heavy than their previous albums and shows the band exploring new sounds. The band joined the 1996 Lollapalooza tour and then supported the album with a worldwide tour. Due to internal tensions, the band broke up in April 1997, making this their final studio album for 16 years. The album's title is from the lyrics in the fourth track 'Dusty'.
