This limited 180gm heavyweight vinyl LP was released to mark Elton John's 50th year in music. Released in October 1975, Rock of the Westies was Elton John's tenth official album. Like his previous hit, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, it debuted at #1 on the US Billboard 200 chart. It features the #1 single 'Island Girl.' The band lineup changed on this album, with long - time drummer Nigel Olsson and bassist Dee Murray replaced by Roger Pope and Kenny Passarelli. James Newton - Howard, a Grammy, Emmy, and Academy Award nominee, got major exposure as the keyboardist. Caleb Quaye, an old friend from John's early days, also joined. Davey Johnstone and Ray Cooper were retained from the previous lineup.
