Five high - school students from diverse backgrounds face a Saturday detention under strict principal Miguel Aldana. The group consists of rebel Jon Sortland, outcast Tahiti Pehrson, smart Genaro Vergoglini, and jock Jason Clark. Each student gets a chance to share their story, changing the others' views. At the end of the day, they wonder if school will ever be the same. Led by Jon Sortland of The Shins and artist Tahiti Pehrson, Tla's music touches the zeitgeist. Tla's songs are creatively unique, using stream - of - consciousness songwriting and inspired by decades of friendship and 70s, 80s, and 90s pop culture.
