In the early 1960s in Rhode Island, teenagers were divided into two groups. There were the Collegiates, the well - behaved, studious students aiming for university, and the Mondos. The Mondos dressed in skintight black peg pants, black boots, and collarless jackets. In 1964, a group of Woonsocket High School students, the Mondos, created one of Rhode Island's greatest rock and roll moments with 'Rip It Up', not worrying about SAT scores. They are the Ocean State's earliest waxed garage rock 'n' roll band. Their self - released debut disc, 'Mondo Moe', came out on their own FM label in 1963.
