After the band's highly ambitious and well - received 2009 song - cycle 'The Hazards of Love', this album deliberately turns towards simplicity. Produced by Tucker Martine again, it has special guest appearances by Americana star Gillian Welch and legendary R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck. The album shows that The Decemberists sound equally glorious in simple, stripped - down compositions as in their elaborate works of the past. It was recorded in a converted barn at Pendarvis Farm, an 80 - acre estate with lush meadows, forests, and views of Mt. Hood outside Portland.
