Thelonious Monk was a relatively unknown figure in the New York City bebop scene. Then, Blue Note founder Alfred Lion discovered him, fell in love with his utterly unique music, and gave Monk his first chance to record as a leader. Between 1947 and 1948, over four recording sessions, Blue Note captured Monk performing his special compositions in trio, quartet, quintet, and sextet setups. These compositions include well - known pieces like “’Round Midnight,” “Ruby My Dear,” “Epistrophy,” “Well You Needn’t,” and “Thelonious.” The result was the 10” LP Genius of Modern Music. In 1956, Blue Note switched to 12” LPs and started the famous 1500 Series. This series included the expanded Genius of Modern Music, Volume One (BLP 1510) with one of Reid Miles’ early cover designs for the label. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is mono, all - analog, mastered by Kevin Gray, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal. Each customer can buy a maximum of 4 copies.
