Description

Once again, Ian Carter and Nicola Kearey of Stick In The Wheel grabbed their recording gear and explored new corners of England, both literally and metaphorically. They asked folk and traditional musicians about what 'From Here' meant to them. What drives the impulse to make music right here in England? What does it signify to create music in 2019 within the framework of English traditional music and culture? In these chaotic and politically uncertain times, as England is divided, looking to the past to understand the future becomes crucial. These are truly timely questions. Nicola Kearey said, 'The more we travelled, the less we found we knew. At every turn, there were surprises and frustrations. Identity is something to grasp or push away. We strive to understand who we are, where we're going, and where we came from. Now more than ever, our identity matters. This music culture and canon is a living, breathing entity that deserves respect and serious consideration.' This recording offers a snapshot of the current English folk scene, featuring everyone from seasoned pros to folk - club singers. Recorded on - site in front rooms and kitchens using two pairs of microphones, it captures immediate, intimate, yet powerful and evocative performances. It's not about collecting songs to fit a pre - determined idea of folk music; instead, it's an attempt to document what folk music truly is, a thriving and persistent continuum in this country. Spanning from the old Northumbrian kingdoms, through the Midlands, all the way to the Welsh border, a diverse group of experimental and traditional musicians interpret the music that roots them in their own unique ways. The songs and tunes reflect everyday life in England, covering topics from racing pigeons to lost children, domestic violence to political street fighting. Each artist's response to 'From Here' is a statement of 'this is who I am, this is where I'm from'.
