Colleen Green has always been cool, but in 2015's I Want To Grow Up, she didn't quite feel it. Caught in an existential crisis, being too young to be free of insecurities yet old enough to be fed up with them, she was at a crossroads. Five years later, with a new album, she's exploring what it means to be grown - up and realizes it's actually pretty cool.
The opener, “Someone Else,” is a tribute to personal power. Green makes it clear that double standards work both ways. A groovy bass loop and zig - zagging guitar lines highlight her discovery that happiness is in her own hands. Then comes the witty and catchy “I Wanna Be A Dog,” where she celebrates the simplicity of a dog's life and questions her own over - complication. “Highway,” dark and slinky, uses ruthless driving as a metaphor for a lifestyle she's over.
Fed up with bad feelings and eager for fun with melodies and beats, Green enlisted producer Gordon Raphael (The Strokes). Raphael, already a fan after seeing her in L.A., was struck by her confidence and power. Together with drummer Brendan Eder and hip - hop producer Aqua, they created Cool in Los Angeles over a few weeks.
The album's themes converge in the anthemic “It’s Nice to Be Nice.” Green reminds herself that you reap what you sow, an important lesson in emotional maturity that defines Cool.
