Description
The mid - '80s in Kansai, Japan, were a thrilling era for music. There were more stages for bands, more releases from independent labels, and a diverse range of bands with different styles. In Japan at that time, women's rights were a topic of discussion but not very visible in reality. There were few women in the underground music scene, and none of them dressed like punks or dyed their hair to show independence. In 1981, Hikko, Mika, and Emiko, as OXZ, made a deliberately shocking debut. While it was okay for young women to form bands in high - school music clubs and play cover songs at school events, performing in live houses in OXZ's bold and provocative way was unheard of. OXZ, contemporaries of Shonen Knife, were famous for their intense live shows. Their 1984 8' EP and subsequent catalog featured moody, dark post - punk that was ahead of its time. The bass and drums are dominant, and the guitars are angular and spiky, adding an extra edge to punk. Along Ago: 1981 - 1989 gathers the band's entire catalog (three EPs and a single) along with unearthed, unreleased demos. In 1989, the band disbanded. The name OXZ might mean 'going beyond all usual standards' as in Japan, O means acceptable and X means rejected.
